The same loan at different rates
Over 3 years, at example rates: 11% → ₹16,369 a month and ₹89,284 of interest. 12% → ₹16,607 and ₹97,852. 14% → ₹17,089 and ₹1,15,204. 16% → ₹17,579 and ₹1,32,844. Personal loans are unsecured, so the rate depends far more on your credit history and income than a home loan’s does.
A flat rate is not the same number
Some offers quote a "flat" rate, charged on the original amount for the whole term rather than on what you still owe. At 12% flat, ₹5,00,000 over 3 years carries ₹1,80,000 of interest, against ₹97,852 at 12% on a reducing balance. The headline percentage is identical and the cost is nearly double, so ask which kind of rate you are being quoted and compare the total interest, not the percentage.
Processing fees are charged on top and are usually deducted from the amount paid out, so you receive less than ₹5,00,000 while repaying on the full ₹5,00,000.
Where the money goes, and paying early
In the first month, ₹5,000 of the ₹16,607 is interest and ₹11,607 reduces the loan. Across the first year you pay ₹1,99,284 and the balance falls by ₹1,47,211; halfway through, you still owe ₹2,72,326.
Adding ₹2,000 a month from the start clears the loan 5 months sooner and saves ₹12,617 of interest. A single ₹50,000 part payment in the first month also clears it 5 months sooner and saves ₹20,375. Personal loans are commonly on fixed rates, where a foreclosure or part-payment charge may apply, so check your loan agreement before paying early.
